device names are not stable. use UUID as bootarg if you need a reliable root.

closing as not a bug.

I don't think that's a very good answer!

1) This problem renders the machine unusable on an upgrade from a pretty stock Etch. That's a BAD THING!

2) Correct me if I'm wrong, but using the UUID is not going to help if /dev/sda doesn't exist. IDE works, SATA does not.

I still have both virtual disks and can mount one or the other and poke around to provide more data, as needed.
