So you're upgrading from sarge, to etch, to lenny? This generally should work but since you've left it so late to upgrade most people will have forgotten about the 'gotchas' and you won't get a lot of support with the upgrade. Any preinst script will be installed as /var/lib/dpkg/info/<package-name>.preinst. However, the official kernel packages for etch didn't use preinst scripts.
