Good news: I'm not able to reproduce my issue with Julien's patches. The timeout works reliable again for me and the interface gets an ip address much more reliable as well (on first try it happens immediately and worked in all my test cases, on 2nd, 3rd,... try on the same interface I often see DHCPDISCOVER/DHCPOFFER/DHCPREQUEST in the dhcp server logs but the interface doesn't take it, though I'm lacking time to further debug it right now and it's just a minor issue compared to the original problem).
