There have been some problems with use of KMS on some older Intel GPUs, so we disabled it in version 2.6.32-21. This actually made things worse in many cases, so we reverted in 2.6.32-24. Please send the output of 'lspci -nn | grep 0300' so we can check whether you are using one of the affected chips. Also try upgrading to the latest version (2.6.32-26).
