This does no more happen if I uncheck the "display power management" check box in xscreensaver's preferences. (Which can count as workaround.) It nevertheless happens, too, if X itself blanks the screen in the case xscreensaver is not running. So it does not seem to be xscreensaver related at all, but probably DPMS related.
