Beyond that, all bets are off. I certainly don't think the instructions are inappropriate, unless there is some way they cause harm that I missed. Are you in contact with the upstream i915 team? Perhaps a pointer on that page to another page describing how to handle psb bugs would avoid confusion. Luckily the bug isn't reproducible in 3.8.y, so that particular question is moot.
