I tried stable wheezy with kernel 3.2.0-4-kirkwood on my QNAP TS-412 (logs
attached) and unstable as of 13.03.2014 (sorry, didn’t remember kernel version)
with same result.
The «delayroot» boot argument set to 20 sec helped me.
In a few days will try latest kernel and report then.

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/mapper/vg00-system does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
