I have a desktop (ASUS TUSI-M motherboard) which uses the SiS900 and
have had no problems with 2.4.19-686. What does dmsg have to say? I
see the following:

sis900.c: v1.08.04 4/25/2002
PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:01.1
PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 00:05.0
eth0: SiS 900 Internal MII PHY transceiver found at address 1.
eth0: Using transceiver found at address 1 as default
eth0: SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet at 0xd400, IRQ 10, 00:e0:18:5e:03:af.
