I got my hands on a second hand laptop recently and played with if for a few hours in the condition that I got it (windows). I distinctly remember connecting it to the internet via dial-up to get some linmodem drivers and the modem handshake was audiable. I used the Compaq restore cds to rebuild doze (because 1: it might be needed for some reason 2: what was there was big and I didnt have admin access). After Debian was installed, kernel rebuilt and modem drivers compiled I connected with a dial-up again. Only this time the handshake could not be heard - neither in doze or Linux. Ive played around with everything I can think of but the only thing I can think of is that the restore cds changes something in the hardware. Is there something that I dont know about? Has anyone else had a similar problem? Anybody have any ideas as to how to fix it? I know its trivial but its starting to annoy me...
