I am a Linux newby.
Trying to get into the internet using my laptop (thinkpad R 40) at home.
I have debian and knoppix on it.
The guy that installed the software on it set up an ethernet connection.
What I do to connect via ethernet cable is pppoeconf. Choose yes for every thing (after having read the question) then delete the two files from /etc/ppp which it has created (you will see what they are called and where they are at boot-up: It will say that that method has been deprecated.). That should solve your problem. If not, we may need to add some words to the /etc/network/interfaces file.
