Thanks sting. That's a useful pointer - there's plenty on there that I've
been wanting to know!
I've had a look through the page you pointed to and it discusses booting
starting from the BIOS launching (POST, splash screen etc.). However, the
laptop doesn't reach that stage - no POST, the usual splash screen isn't
displayed, and so on. This seems to imply it isn't an issue with the boot
sequence, but with the fact that the boot sequence isn't even reached.
Thanks for the idea either way. Any more? ;)

power on even though it would normally power on at around the same time as the
DVD drive spinning up during a normal (non-wol) boot.
Does anyone have any ideas what this might be? I'm stumped.
