THE HISTORY OF EASTER Your Retirement By: Brandee Musiala Easter is an important Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Crucified under the order of Pontius Pilate for accusations of "blasphemy", he arose three days later on Easter Sunday. The word 'Easter' is derived from Eostre, the goddess of spring and fertility. Easter is now more than just a single day observance. It begins with Ash Wednesday, a 40-day period of reflection before Easter Sunday and continues with Eastertide, a celebration of his ascension into heaven, for another 50 days.
