The attached patch adds a new warning checking whether the dh_pysupport helper is available in debian/rules. This check could probably be extended by parsing the presence of python-support build-dependency, though: debhelper used to add dh_pysupport to its default sequence in older versions, maintainers using dh7 format would have had dh_pysupport for free.
