I hope somebody can help me out:

I boot up the live image, select "Live" from the boot menu. Once booted I
dbl-click on "Debian Installer". It launches, asks me things (all defaults)
and installs the system fine. Then I'm presented with "Debian installer main
menu", with the "Configure the package manager" step highlighted, presumably
because that step failed. Running "Configure the package manager" again
takes about a second, but I get no indication about whether it passed or
failed. The highlighted task doesn't move forward. If I forcibly move on to
"Install the GRUB boot loader on a hard disk", I get to a working system,
but with only a "deb cdrom:" line in sources.list.

If I instead pick "Text Install" from the same image's boot menu, it works.
I end up getting presented with "Configure the package manager" / "Debian
archive mirror country" selection as expected.

I'm not able to find any debian installer log file anywhere. Is there
somewhere I can look? I've looked at CTRL-ALT-F[1-9], /var/log and /tmp.
Network connectivity seems fine and I can e.g. ping www.google.com from a
terminal in the live image, although a single time I did see that
resolv.conf was empty apart from a comment (ping didn't work then, of
course).

But since I'd like to customize the live image, I'd like the "Debian
Installer" approach to work. Is there something I'm doing wrong or something
fishy in my setup?

I'm running as a guest in VMware ESX. Since the "Text Install" works fine, I
assume that VMware and DNS/DHCP servers are working fine. I've tried these
images, which all have this behavior:

debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso
debian-live-6.0.1-i386-lxde-desktop.iso
debian-live-squeeze-i386-lxde-desktop.iso (22-Apr-2011 02:18 p.t. the
latest)
