I'm writing you on behalf of the Debian Med project which tries to assemble free software in life sciences into Debian to support this field of endeavour as best as possible. (Here you can find a list of the packaged software[0].) Fasta3 uses files licensed under a non-free academic-only license: src/global_sse2.c src/global_sse2.h src/glocal_sse2.c src/glocal_sse2.h src/smith_waterman_sse2.c and thus according to the Debian Free Software Guidelines[1] which are widely accepted as Open Source definition, fasta3 is considered non-free even if other components are licensed under an open source license. However recently I stumbled upon the article[2] and according this article the license of Michael Farrar’s striped SIMD Smith/Waterman has been changed to BSD open source license. Could you please take this change into consideration and update the license of the files mentioned above ? This will make fasta3 completely free software.
