And default compilers for your local architecture are listed in
/usr/share/doc/gcc/README.Debian. For i386:

        cpp     - cpp-2.95.4    (package cpp-2.95)
        gcc     - gcc-2.95.4    (package gcc-2.95)
        g++     - g++-2.95.4    (package g++-2.95)
        g77     - g77-2.95.4    (package g77-2.95)
        gcj     - gcj-3.0.4     (package gcj-3.0)
        gij     - gij-3.0.4     (package gij-3.0)
        gobjc   - gcc-2.95.4    (package gobjc-2.95)
        gpc     - gpc-2.95.4    (package gpc-2.95)
        chill   - chill-2.95.4  (package chill-2.95)

I don't know where the corresponding list for all architectures is.

But the plan is to move all architectures to gcc-3.2 for sarge.
I don't know why this hasn't happened already.
