Please check the developers reference for details. If you want to become the maintainer of the package, read up on the ITS process, this might be the/a better approach for your case. Thank you for the info. I will read up on this process more thoroughly before attempting an NMU in the future.
In the mean time for this package, I will propose my changes as salsa merge requests.
