You can add the icon in XPM format. This is plain text. If you want to use the PNGs, you will need to send them to upstream and ask them to include the icons in the source. I haven't found any other way to avoid the problem you cite.

Hi,

I would like to ask your help about the following problem:

I created a PNG icon for a package that originally (in the orig.tar.gz)
didn't contain one. I get this error when trying to build the package:

dpkg-source: cannot represent change to icon.png: binary file contents
changed

Can you tell me what could/should I do in order to add the PNG file to
the package?

Thanks in advance,

Zoltan
