There are a couple of linux distro's out there (stampede + enoch) that have optimised binaries for a specific cpu (eg. K6, pentium, p2 etc) they claim pretty good performance improvements.
I mentoned this a few days on irc and got grilled pretty badly for even suggesting it....(i feel safer posting it here) I would have thought that it would be fairly easy to change the compile option in the debian source packages (im not very familiar with the format) so it would be easy to make cpu specific builds of debian. I know 486's (and maybe a few 386's) are still used and can perform valuable jobs. But the vast majority of users would see a performance increase if in some way had access to binaries optimised for there cpu. Am i offtrack in thinking this ?
