Why do you need the --datadir option?
My guess is that both options are mutually exclusive, you should not
specify the destination directory both in the configure and in the make
flags.
I don't know if the --datadir flag supresses the manual setting of make
variables, but maybe that's the case.

Check the generated Makefile to see where does this --datadir flag acts
uppon, maybe it helps...
