You are still responsible for the debian package, so simply taking the
ubuntu one without further checks that it follows the debian
requirements is not good.

If I was you, I'd go with what I had created since this is what I know
and can guarantee for. Taking a look at the ubuntu package and
borrowing some ideas from it if appropriate is also good (check
packaging licensing though).

On the other hand, if ubuntu package is much superior, you may want to
take it and check if everything is alright - debian/copyright, other
control files etc, pretending that you see it for the first time.

In any case, cooperation with the ubuntu maintainer should be more
productive than two solo performances, I guess.
