There's something wrong with the tarball. According to the .dsc file:
04dd905a3bb001516045fc06eff46085 2855 qtoctave_0.5.1-1.diff.gz
here:
$ md5sum *diff*
a855b539cf5cee5a0dfe42e55c9bddcc qtoctave_0.5.1-1.diff.gz
Indeed, the diff file is a gzipped tarball, containing the .dsc and the
original tarball.
You might want to join the Debian Octave Group.
