Just as a quick question, if you use xpdf with the poppler backend, do
you have poppler-data installed? It contains the character mappings
established by adobe for fonts...

Actually, can you use any poppler-based (evince, epdfview, okular etc)
document viewer to view your Japanese documents with poppler-data
installed? If you can, what results do you get?
