when I try to build mathgl in my build environment (not within a clean
chroot), it fails with message

Please install hdf5 headers
although /usr/include/hdf5.h header is present because
libhdf5-openmpi-dev, which provides /usr/include/hdf5.h, has been
installed.
The answer is in config.log:
