Did you pass the right options for the platform to QEMU?
FWIW, I use the following to start the installer:
qemu-system-mipsel -M malta -cpu 4Kc -kernel vmlinux-2.6.26-1-4kc-malta -initrd
initrd.gz -hda hda.img -append console=ttyS0 -nographic
Sorry for the continuous questions, but...
I was able to get it to run fine but when I try to power off the emulator,
it sates that it is halting and then it restarts the emulator.
