Ok, now I know a bit more which might help to track this stupid thing
down:

OO normally does not work with gnome running here.

BUT: When I start the gnome-session-properties suddenly OO starts, but
while starting there is a window:
        Warning:
No response to the SaveYourself command.
The program may be slow, stopped or broken.
You may wait for it to respond or remove it.

        Cancel Ok
This window is created by gnome-session-properties (I can only use the
gui of gnome-session-properties only after I have clicked it away).

Do you have ANY idea what could be the reason for this misbehaviour?

The session I have normally running looks like this:
Order Style State Program
00 o run gnome-smproxy --sm-config .....
20 o run metacity
40 o run gnome-panel
40 o run nautilus
50 o run gnome-cups-icon
50 run /usr/bin/gdesklets

The "o" is the `repeated startup' style.

After OO is started I can close the gnome-session-properties program and
OO is happily continuing to work!

Best wishes

Norbert
