Package: openoffice.org-bin
Version: 1.1.1-3
Severity: important

As discussed on IRC, changing dependencies in the build process would prevent
the _all packages from being uploaded
to architectures not supported by OpenOffice (sorry for the straight cut&paste;
I could not think how to summarize
the issue otherwise):

12:58 < Q-FUNK> can anyone think of a solution for the Architecture line of a
meta-package that installs various
localisation files, so that the package can only be installed
on the 4 architectures supported by
openoffice?12:59 < Q-FUNK> Architecture: i386 powerpc sparc s390
13:00 < Q-FUNK> that came to mind, but would require actually building the
package separately for each architecture,
which is not what I want. I just want that package not to be
installable on non-supported architectures.
13:01 < martink> well, openoffice.org (the package) has "Architecture: all"
13:02 < martink> and it's obviously useless on anything but i386, powerpc,
sparc, s390
13:03 < Q-FUNK> wouldn't it make sense to make a policy change to re-introduct
the [arch] tag for control?
13:14 < martink> <i-am-not-a-d-d> Don't know </i-am-not-a-d-d> ;-)
13:15 < LarstiQ> the way tasksel deals with it is depending on
openoffice.org-bin instead
13:26 < Q-FUNK> that's how my funkyware-dekstop package is made (depends upon
-bin), but funkyware-oo-locales just
depends upon the myspell dictionaries and locales themselves.
13:28 < martink> but the locales depend on openoffice.org which depends on
openoffice.org-bin. Is that not enough of
                a hint for apt
13:35 < Q-FUNK> no. it still preselects the packages, but complains that -bin
is not available.
13:35 < Q-FUNK> there's no way to prevent someone from accidentally selecting
the funkyware-oo-locales package on an
                arch not supported by OOo
13:36 < Q-FUNK> because the -all packages for OOo are still available in
non-supported arches' repositories.
17:39 < haggai> Q-FUNK: the -all packages never leave unstable for those arches
AFAIK
17:40 < _rene_> hmm? context?
17:41 < haggai> 11:58 < Q-FUNK> that came to mind, but would require actually
building the package separately
17:41 < haggai> for each architecture, which is not what I
want. I just want that package not
17:41 < haggai> to be installable on non-supported
architectures.
17:41 < haggai> 12:34 < Q-FUNK> because the -all packages for OOo are still
available in non-supported arches'
17:41 < haggai> repositories.
17:42 < _rene_> for what?
17:42 < haggai> ah, you mean you missed the conversation? I'll /msg it to you
17:42 < _rene_> btw, what you say is not true. openoffice.org _is_ in the
packages files for !i386,sparc,powerpc,s390
17:42 < haggai> in testing?
17:42 < _rene_> excuse me if I got it wrong
17:42 < _rene_> Hmm
17:42 < _rene_> good question :)
17:42 < _rene_> I think yes
17:43 * haggai thought not
17:43 < _rene_> let's look
17:44 < _rene_> http://ftp-master.debian.org/testing/testing_probs.html
17:44 < _rene_> and search for openoffice.org
17:45 < haggai> oh yuk
17:45 < haggai> [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ grep "Package: openoffice.org$"
/home/org/ftp.root/debian/dists/*/main/binary-arm/Packages
17:45 < haggai>
/home/org/ftp.root/debian/dists/sarge/main/binary-arm/Packages:Package:
openoffice.org
17:45 < haggai>
/home/org/ftp.root/debian/dists/sid/main/binary-arm/Packages:Package:
openoffice.org
17:46 < _rene_> jep...
17:47 < _rene_> a way to make it lesser confusing would be a s/-bin// and make
openoffice.org -common or so
17:47 < _rene_> maybe we could do that post-sarge
17:56 < haggai> hmm, I guess so
18:01 < _rene_> because testing ignores all packages' installability on !i386
18:01 < _rene_> s/all/_all/
18:03 < Q-FUNK> hopefully pre-sarge
18:03 < _rene_> Q-FUNK: you really don't want us to chenage the structure in
this way so short before a release?
18:03 < _rene_> Q-FUNK: no way
18:03 < _rene_> s/n't//
18:04 < LarstiQ> well
18:04 < _rene_> although this change really makes sense...
18:04 < LarstiQ> indeed
18:04 < LarstiQ> openoffice wasn't in woody, no?
18:05 < _rene_> right
18:08 < LarstiQ> well then, if the change can be debugged pre-sarge :)
18:12 < haggai> sorry folks, it's too late to change it
18:13 < haggai> we'll mess up stuff like tasksel
18:16 * LarstiQ nods
18:16 * LarstiQ has no idea about timeframes and such
18:16 < LarstiQ> haggai: but talking about it with tasksel and other people
involved won't hurt?
18:18 < _rene_> LarstiQ: roughly speaking: as soon as d-i is ready there'll be
the freeze
18:18 < _rene_> and d-i now has rc's...
18:18 < LarstiQ> knowing d-i, that will coincide with hell freezing over
18:19 < haggai> LarstiQ: they have been hacking on it and doing release testing
all week here at debconf
18:19 < LarstiQ> aaaah, debconf
18:19 < haggai> LarstiQ: it won't be long now
18:19 < LarstiQ> right, that will help :)
18:19 < LarstiQ> it did last year *cough*
18:20 < LarstiQ> haggai: see my point?
18:20 < Q-FUNK> but it would be silly to leave such an obvious bug open.
otherwise, we'll have to wait 2 years to
                get it done...
18:20 < LarstiQ> haggai: I hope it happens soon, yes, but it's been like that
for even longer
18:20 < _rene_> Q-FUNK: it would be silly to do this major change now
18:20 < LarstiQ> Q-FUNK: have to balance it with breaking things at this stage
tho
18:21 < _rene_> Q-FUNK: and possibly introduce new bugs
18:21 < _rene_> Q-FUNK: package relationships, upgrade stuff, tasks, ...
18:21 < Q-FUNK> IMHO, the change should still be made and uploaded to unstable
as 1.1.1-4. If it makes it on time,
if not, people using testing will still eventually see it.
18:22 < Q-FUNK> _rene_: well right now there's nothing to upgrade from, as far
as OOo is concerned. there's still
time. I realize it's a lot of work rather close to the freeze,
but it would really help if it could
                be done now.
18:23 < Q-FUNK> and I really am NOT confident with d-i being really completed
and 100% bug-free on all 11
                architectures on time.
18:24 < Q-FUNK> the d-i is getting better all the time, but it's still not
quite there on all architectures.
18:25 < Q-FUNK> well, anyhow, the decision is up to you guys, of course. :)
18:26 < _rene_> you could write wishlist bug with which we we'll deal when the
time comes ;)
18:27 < _rene_> errors in this sentence are a gift ;)
18:33 < Q-FUNK> hm??
18:34 < _rene_> we we'll, missing a etc :)
18:35 < LarstiQ> if all parties involved agree to go ahead, it can be done?
18:36 < LarstiQ> just don't break this under people's noses
18:36 < LarstiQ> I don't think ooo will be dropped from sarge, so you'll be
lynched instead :)
18:37 * _rene_ ponders writing a big plate "it's LarstiQ's fault" ;)
18:37 < LarstiQ> that, of course, would also do
18:37 < _rene_> which will protect us ;-)
18:38 < LarstiQ> and they can't strip me from anything much
18:42 < haggai> I'm sorry, I really think this is far too late
18:42 < LarstiQ> haggai: even with the big plate that has my name on it?
18:42 < haggai> we can't afford to have all the delays and time needed to do
this
18:42 < _rene_> LarstiQ: yes
18:42 < _rene_> LarstiQ: it was a joke
18:43 < haggai> this should have been done at least a few months ago. Iagree
it is a problem and needs fixing, but
the fix has too many possible problems
18:43 < LarstiQ> bah, why does haggai have to be sensible
18:43 < haggai> heh :)
18:44 < haggai> 'cos I get all the flack when it breaks? :)
18:44 < LarstiQ> I'm still willing to accept a big plate ;)
18:44 < LarstiQ> _rene_: (yes, that's joking)
