So either you have something GNOME'ish running (GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID / 
GNOME_SM_PROXY / NAUTILUS_DESKTOP_WINDOW_ID) or use one of the envvars...

That it is in -core is interesting, but I think that was just because 
pluginapp.bin is linked to GTk anyway, as you said (and if I am not totally 
mistaken this was always the case anyway)
