Package: openoffice.org
Version: 1:2.4.1-12
Severity: normal
In my home directory on a network with redhat 3,4,5 and debian
machines, on which I occasionally use openoffice on all of them, I
have directories like:
~/.openoffice.org2.0
~/.rhopenoffice1.1
In running debian sid's openoffice for the first time, it always
insisted on popping up errors about:
Error when loading BASIC of document
file:///usr/lib/ooo-1.1/share/basic/WebWizard/script.xlb:
General error.
General I/O-error
Doing a recursive grep on WebWizard/script.xlb, I found it both
appeared in the newly created directory ~/.openoffice.org2, and in one
of the previous directories ~/.rhopenoffice1.1
If I blew away both, and started openoffice again, it now worked fine
(albeit, with none of my remembered settings).
I can understand why openoffice initially trawls through all the old
directories to get profile settings, but it needs to be more careful
about picking up invalid settings (encoding paths of distribution
specific files into a user-profile directory? WTF?). More to the
point, why did it decide to pick up redhat openoffice 1.1 settings
instead of openoffice 2.0 settings from a openoffice 2 installation of
slightly less ancient vintage?
The canonical solution presented on the web is "to just delete the old
profile directory", which is unacceptable, in that you lose your
profile settings, and more to the point here, is unworkable in a
distributed environment of heterogeneous machines sharing home
directories over nfs, with openoffice installations that all want to
use different directory structures?
