I have tested the patch with the latest version of the Debian package (1.3.3-2 at the time of writing). I simply added it to the patch series and rebuilt the package: it applied cleanly, all the tests passed, and it fixed the bug. Debian Emacs users would be most grateful for this patch to be included!
