As a maintainer of console-cyrillic I have the following problem. I want this package not to depend on perl, I want it to only recommend perl. The package contains a startup shell script in /etc/rcS.d. I want this script to have different behaviour depending on wether the package perl is installed in the system. Is there some reliable way to check if perl is installed? I don't want to use dpkg, because this is too slow.
