That is not exactly true: See 9.4. Console messages from `init.d' scripts In particular the message end by a dot followed by a newline if and only if the script is successful. If you see something like ... $ /etc/init.d/foo start Starting foo daemon: foo $ ... the script failed. On the other hand, if you get $ /etc/init.d/foo start Starting foo daemon: foo. $ ... then the script run correctly.
