For whatever it's worth, I'm not sure that I would bother, even though I share with you the general desire to be correct about things like this. While semantically such fields are incorrect according to the specification, in practice I don't believe any format-aware reader exists. The files are read by humans or by scripts that likely don't care about this fine distinction. As evidence, I note that no one had previously noticed that this formatting is technically incorrect.
