        Some possibilities for it would be:

        1 - to netboot Linux (I don't know if it can be made to work
            with oldworlds -- but I'd appreciate if pointers were
            given regarding this);
        2 - install some Linux distribution that is bootable with a CD
            on an oldworld (like the (dead?) LinuxPPC) and then
            install Debian on a chrooted partition of your HD (I
            actually did this some time ago when my floppy wasn't
            working with my uncle's 9500/180MP).

        Anyway, it won't be easy without a floppy to experiment with
        new kernels without a floppy, since you won't have access to
        quik's menu as open firmware is weird with the oldworlds (that
        is, if quik even has a menu -- I have never seen it due to
        lack of support from OF on the oldworld I tried).

        If you had a floppy, then you could install test kernels on
        the floppy and everything on the HD would be fine/safe.

        I would then recommend you to use MacOS with BootX to use it
        as a method to choose among a bunch of test kernels, if you
        can afford to have MacOS on the box.

        Hope this helps, Roger...
