Just for reference: no updating to the latest kernel will not help. This is one outstanding issue: https://udd.debian.org/cgi-bin/bts-usertags.cgi?tag=ppc64&user=debian-powerpc%40lists.debian.org -> https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=790690 I believe someone posted instructions to rebuild your ppc64 kernel to cope with this issue.
