Herewith the command that shall work.
I know it is more work for you. You could really update it, or create a fork.
I cannot help currently on cups, got too much work.
Sane CAN so SHALL CUPS too !! 2013 is our year. Network exists widely.

That's not how it works; you first need to _add_ the printer to cups:
1) Check what driver is available:
# lpinfo -m | grep g510g
drv:///hpijs.drv/hp-officejet_4500_g510g-m-hpijs.ppd HP Officejet 4500
g510g-m hpijs, 3.13.4
2) Create the printer
# lpadmin -p my-hp-printer -E -v "hp:/net/Officejet_4500_G510g-
m?ip=192.168.1.8" -m drv:///hpijs.drv/hp-officejet_4500_g510g-m-
hpijs.ppd
3) Print to the newly created printer
lp -d my-hp-printer plan.pdf
