Wmaker can be tweaked to run pretty fast, if you turn off all special effects, gradients etc. and carefully choose your dockapps. For a newbie switching from Windows I'd also recommend IceWM: it is about as fast as fvwm and looks more familiar and less confusing for a Windows user (has taskbar, for example). -- Dmitry Borodaenko
