I vaguely recall that we raised this issue with the FSF and they expressed the opinion that they would consider it a breach of the GFDL if the stuff displayed to the user was not the exact invariant form. So the GFDL does not qualify for the patches-only clause. All possible ways in which the GFDL could be suborned to be DFSG-free have been explored at length, years ago.
