Your analysis and analogy misses a complete aspect of this issue, and namely that in this case it is not simply a party or otherwise event with no importance, but that the rejection in question has an impact on the work being done, and thus impacts our users, and so, is not in accord with our social contract, where we engaged ourself (at least those who are DDs), to put free software and our users as our priorities, and thus before injured-pride and personal vengeance, and other such exclusion-justifications. So, this fallacy may sheed a light into the Ted/Jonathan-Debaconf events, but is totally off-topic here. You may disagree on this, but i urge you to investigate the background of such malfunctions before you comment on them in the future.
