tkmixer runs fine, and I believe I have a standard configuration on my
system. Probably the following line fixes the issue:
        /etc/modprobe.d/oss-compat.conf: install snd-mixer modprobe
--ignore-install snd-mixer $CMDLINE_OPTS && { modprobe --quiet snd-mixer-oss ;
: ; }
I am not quite sure where it orginates from, but probably from
alsa-configuration.

Best regards

Ben
