I am not sure if this is a bug in xview or in the application. There is
something VERY strange I don't know how to explain.
There is a free-ish symbolic math software named MuPAD (www.mupad.de). The
Linux versions can be downloded from ftp.mupad.de. It is NOT open source,
but most of mathematical algorithms in it are available for reading. The
math kernel however is only binary.
There are several binaries for Linux all dependent on xview and most of
them have some problem under Debian. I had many problems for years with
this program, but today I encountered something which I can't explain and
I feel like I just met an alien... :-|
I downloaded the SuSe compatible libc2.1 binary and installed it in
/usr/local. It does not work on ANY Window manager except olvwm (I did
not test olwm). I installed according with instructions. then in
Enlightenment from ANY terminal window I write xmupad and problems come
and I have to kill it. This was tested from Eterm, rxvt, xterm, bash
... ANY.
Then I started olvwm. From Eterm win xmupad does not start well. Then
somehow I decided to test from rxvt. And it started OK. It works also
from bash win, xterm....
Note: This version of xmupad is part of Suse and apparently works also on
Mandrake and RedHat. But it has problems in Debian. That's why I
suspect something wrong in Debian.
I see this kind of problem for the first time in my "computer life" -
some X program starts from one term window and not from other and does
not start at all from some Window manager and this problem is only in
Debian.
It has something to do with xview libs, but I don't know what. Please,
check this and if you find the problem interesting write to these guys and
possibly help them to create Debian compatible binary. There are not so
many free active software packages for computer algebra.

closing this ancient bug that was almost certainly in the non-debian
binary. If you can't get source and compile againt the debian packages,
then try to get an unlinked version and link with the debian libraries.
