I wrote 'a routine `apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade`(*)’ -- and forgot the footnote:
(*)I do not in fact 'routinely' run those as-is! I always run a test-update and look for anomalies, like the ones I am reporting today. And then sometimes skip updating, or do partial / surgical updates, whatever it takes to hold the ship together properly...
