The original subject was bad.  I should have written: "KMail freezes very 
often" in stead of: "KMail freezes sometimes".

I thought, emptying my trash folder with over 15,000 mails might reduce the 
time such a KMail freezes takes but then I had the problem that emptying the 
folder took **very** long.  8.5 hours(!!!) after starting the emptying 
process there were still over 13,900(!!!) e-mails left.  I should note that 
while emptying the trash folder, KMail consumed approximately 90% of CPU 
time.

I killed KMail via xkill and deleted the e-mails by deleting the contents of 
trash/cur.  Now KMail still seems to suffer from the freezes.

This bug should get high priority since, as I've shown, it is very
serious.
