Package: kdesktop
Version: 4:3.5.9.dfsg.1-5
Severity: normal
Hi, at some point (probably in the 3.5.9 series somewhere) kdesktop started
interfering with DPMS. The initial symptom was that the screensaver would
always run (when it was supposed to), rather than power saving kicking in
after a while.
When functioning correctly, 'xset dpms force off' would cause the display
to blank (and a relay in the CRT would click) and a few seconds later the
CRT would actually power down, with a second relay click. Display Standby
and Suspend work in the same way.
As it is now, the CRT makes the same clicks, but the second click results
in a monitor that's still alive (despite xset q's claims to the contrary).
Very occasionally, the monitor will enter power saving for some fraction of
a second. And even more rarely, it will successfully power off.
With the screensaver enabled, power saving attempts also cause kdesktop to
emit the following message:
X Error: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied) 10
Major opcode: 2
Minor opcode: 0
Resource id: 0x3c0000f
There are a couple of workarounds:
- kill the kdesktop process (it's not like I ever see my desktop).
- Disable the screensaver 'Start automatically' option.
As both options prevent the screensaver from kicking in automatically, I am
hoping for other alternatives. :)
Invoking the screensaver via locking the screen does not itself inhibit
power saving.

Hi,
You filed the bug http://bugs.debian.org/496336
in the Debian BTS against the package kdebase.
Debian has switched to KDE 4 in unstable and kdebase
does not exist in KDE 4. Therefore, I am closing this bug as fixed
in *unstable*. The bug will remain open for stable since it is
shipping KDE 3.5.
Ana
