Thats because Python >=2.6 isnt officially supported by Debian. There was a extremely long thread on the debian-devel mailinglist. The problem revolved around that the python package is currently managed by one person alone who is currently sort of not really working on it. The last thing I knew about it was that we might have a group of people maintaining it. Might take a while.
