You might want to take a look at http://cgit.freedesktop.org/gstreamer/gst-plugins-good/tree/ext/cairo/gstcairorender.c#n294 That's what is necessary for cairo for example, it expects xRGB or ARGB in native endianness and I guess it's the same for phonon too.
