Is this something that just started happening suddenly?  I agree it sounds
like a hardware problem.  Can you post your dmesg and kernel log? Any hard
disk problems should be reported in there.

Also, try running memtest86+ for a few hours to see if it picks up any
memory corruption.
Also, is lm-sensors (run "sensors") reporting any overheating?
