This was reported against the version of sddm that was present in experimental at the time. Using sddm 0.13.0-1 in the same system works as expected (if you haven't tested this before you might need to use snapshots.debian.org to fetch it)?

I installed the sddm_0.13.0-1_amd64.deb package from snapshots.debian.org: this
version works as expected.

I'm quite puzzled by this bug, and I would like to have this regression fixed for stretch now that 0.14.0-2 is there. The bug is also reported upstream, but it's mostly inactive.

Since you are the only one that I know of that can reproduce the issue, I'm going to ask for your help in testing and debugging. First, I would like to check if the issue is caused by the build environment (the 0.13 version in snapshots was built agains qt5 5.4, while 0.14 was built against 5.7, for example). For that I've built a sddm 0.13 against the current sid, available from:
https://freak.gnuservers.com.ar/~maxy/debian/sddm_regression_853843/

Could you test this version? Does it still work as expected?

If this works, the next step would be to do a bisect of the upstream changes. They aren't that many, but it would be really helpful if you are able to do the bisect yourself, otherwise I would provide the packages to test for you but this would take a long time.

Happy hacking,
