Убери auth из опций pppd.
мучался с такой же проблемой, но убрать auth из /etc/ppp/options не
помогало, похоже его абсолютно не интерсовало что написано там. Для
root'а помогло в kppp -> Setup -> Accounts -> Edit -> Dial -> "customize
pppd arguments" "noauth" добавить. А что бы и юзеров интернетом
осчаливить пришлось /etc/ppp/peers/kppp создать и там noauth прописать,
а потом в выше упомянутом kppp -> Setup -> Accounts -> Edit -> Dial ->
"customize pppd arguments" надо добавить "call kppp".
