Do you have Vera*.ttf files there? bash-2.05a$ ls /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType/ encodings.dir fonts.scale VeraIt.ttf VeraMoIt.ttf VeraSe.ttf fonts.alias VeraBd.ttf VeraMoBd.ttf VeraMono.ttf Vera.ttf fonts.dir VeraBI.ttf VeraMoBI.ttf VeraSeBd.ttf So let's check whether you see these fonts? try to run xfontsel and select, say, such font: -bitstream-bitstream vera sans mono-medium-r-*-*-17-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1 Yes I can select that one (but it doesn't display any Russian glyphs). And next try to use gnome-terminal (uxterm works incorrectly :( ) and select 'Bitstream Vera Sans Mono' font and try to view any unicode (you have UTF-8 locale?) russian text. I have msttcorefonts package installed, so when selecting any font like -*-andale mono-medium-r-*-*-17-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1 I can see russian glifs '?????' in 3d line. I don't have the andale one, but I selected the Bitstream Vera Sans Mono font . Unfortunately my UTF-8 encoded russian text still displays as boxes.
